How to Sign "Know" in Sign Language

Another sign you want in your arsenal when you are first learning sign language! Similar to UNDERSTAND, you will want to reference this sign to let people know when you are familiar with a concept or not. This is super handy when you are having basic conversations.

Signing "Know"

  1. Hand Shape: Form your dominant hand in a “closed 5” handshape, with all fingers extended and close together.
  2. Sign Location: Position your "closed 5" handshape near your dominant side temple, with your fingers touching your forehead.
  3. Movement: Tap your hand against your dominant side temple. The amount of times you tap is dependent on the emphasis you are trying to make. E.g. To say “I know, I know, I know, I know,” you can tap many times to convey your frustration.
  4. Facial Expression: Depending on the situation, adjust your facial expression accordingly. For example, if you are frustrated, you can roll your eyes or show a frustrated look. If you are gossiping, your face should match that.

Fun Fact

Some experienced signers may move the sign location from the top of the temple to the top of the cheek. If you see this, know it’s the same “KNOW” you love and know!

When signing it yourself isn't enough
