How to Sign “Hungry” in Sign Language

Feeling an intense pang of hunger can lead to increased levels of the hormone ghrelin, which not only makes us crave food but also enhances our sense of smell, making everything smell more delicious.

Signing “Hungry”

  1. Hand shape: Start with your dominant hand in a “closed-5” handshape, but your fingers slightly bent.
  2. Hand location: Bring your hand in front of your body at about chest level, with all of your fingers touch the top of your chest.
  3. Movement: In one quick movement, bring your hand downward, ending at the bottom of your chest.
  4. Facial expression: Open your mouth and furrow your eyebrows to look drained or hungry.
